Background

When did you start playing RtCW, and how did you get into it?

I started playing Rtcw around 2005, before I was watching my brother zoko play because we had only one computer for the whole family. I don't remember playing the solo mod, my brother did but once we've got enough internet connection we played multiplayer on 1.0. We spent a lot of time on a server called KittyCarnage. With my brother, we joined a team called "No Fear" around 2006 and then the captain left so we took the lead and renamed "NoSurrender". We kept the tag but changed the color from white and yellow to white and blue.

Is there a particular gameplay element that keeps you coming back? If so, what is it?

There’s a buzz when you get a cheeky multi frag but I think the nostalgia from the memories that I have of the game is what keeps me coming back. I remember watching Operation Bigmac and the old-school iN and KiH frag movies on my old laptop with Nova growing up which I guess shows that there is something to the game that keeps people coming back when some of those lads are still playing today.

What’s your most memorable moment so far in your RtCW history, and why?

As a player Quakecon 2020 was definitely a memorable moment. Being able to contact and gather the old nS team together in just a couple of weeks was a great achievement in itself. Even if we didn't perform at all it was nice to full hold against Marauders with nS'Alb3rtOoOo saving docs on Beach... Great sensations after a break of twelve years.

To be honest, I didn't think we'd still be playing after almost two years back in the game.

As a streamer, I'd say I was really thrilled to cast the Quakecon EU final & across regions Semi-final because even if my settings weren't perfect I enjoyed sharing this with the community. Having Crumbs telling me he enjoyed it was a great achievement to me :p

What do you feel is the most important skill in terms of contribution to winning games in RtCW?

Well to me no matter what we can say shooting is important! But then I feel it's communication, precise information and calmness.

Why do you play RtCW over other competitive FPS games?

Rtcw combines a lot of things I like in fps. Shooting skills of course but more than that it's the objective gameplay with classes. To me, it's balanced between having different classes and all characters being similar at the same time (same hitboxes, same weapons mostly). It's not like Overwatch (even tho I loved that game) where you get tons of characters with specific sizes and skills.

Plus with nS we played 1.0 and by the time I don't remember we gave that much importance to spawn times. We had to press tab to see it. Today I feel like I'm rediscovering the game because I never used to play with it that way. I really enjoy the rhythm Rtcw has.

The team at LAN

What’s your confirmed lineup, and roles of the players?

We didn't manage to get 6 but so far confirmed we have: Molotov, Tony, Serenity who will be mostly medics, then Alex who will probably be our Panzer, and then myself probably as main LT. We need a last player we'll hopefully find at LAN.

What’s your goal at LAN? Is there a finishing position you are targeting?

The goal is only to have fun. We don't expect anything from the team, that's why the name was appropriate. Though I hope we'll be able to have one or two fair games and not get spawnkilled all the time.

If we can make Marauders or AAA struggle a bit we'd be glad I think (and I'm not saying that because my brother plays there of course!).

What would you say was your best performance as a team to-date?

Being able to practice twice last month was a big achievement, it's been a while since we've tried to play together but with everyone's agenda plus the Season 4 it was hard to organize this. So yeah, it is something! It was the first time we met on voice too.

Who on your team is most likely to miss their flight and turn up late to LAN?

I've just met him but Alex seems crazy enough to miss his flight and still manage to be there on time :D

How do you prepare for games?

We don't prepare really, it'll be yolo with a few instructions I'll give before games start.

Otherwise, we tell each other jokes and the one who tells the worst story has to do the tax (Just a project I have in mind)

Predictions

Of the teams signed up so far, what’s your prediction for final rankings?

There will be some close games but if I had to do a prediction maybe :

- NP

- Flake (EBT)

- N9

- BZ

- Marauders

- AAA

- Follow.ET

- Us

Who are you most looking forward to meeting at LAN and why?

My teammates who seem nice people. The french guys from AAA. My nS teammate Delgon for sure. Also Bonehead because nS has been playing against Marauders for a year and a half now... too many people actually. Twister because it's been a long time France zoko and I know him, same for Mouly. And also all the guys or admins I've organized streams with or played games/gathers: Adlad, Homie, Jin, Crumbs, Stownage, Ditto, Mystx...

Which player do you think is the most likely to drink so much they can’t play the following day?

Graecos seem to drink a lot. But I feel like Douille could do something great too. I hope they'll drink enough so we can have a chance to get a point.

Are there any particular match-ups you’re looking forward to?

Yes, that death triangle between N9, BZ & Flake.

AAA vs Marauders should be a great game too.

The Opposition

Out of the opposition players, who is the most difficult to play against, in your opinion?

Out of our "same level of skill" opposition Bonehead is not easy to play against, it's been a long time I've been playing against him now and he always finds unpredictable ways (unpredictable to me at least) to shoot the Italian rocket.

Which team do you think is most likely to pleasantly surprise people (dark horse pick)?

Flake, I feel like they gonna do great.

Which opposition player do you feel is most underrated?

Delgon, he was already great when he joined nS but he got better (I'm not saying that because I want him to sign up again with nS next season nah :p)

The Future

What does the future hold for you and the team following LAN?

I don't know, I hope my teammates will keep playing after the event. I think it's great to have "new" players coming back to the community. It's tricky because I already got nS as a regular team that couldn't sign up to LAN but who knows depending how it goes I'd be glad to keep playing with those Underdogs because the few games I had with them were fun to play.

If you could make one change to the game, what would it be?

The graphics for sure. I'm not working around the video games industry but sometimes I tell myself how it would be great having some students or a video game studio challenge the graphics. Just keep everything else the same you know: physics, shooting, maps... But just have a graphic lifting. I think it would help more players to get into it. Some of my friends don't want to try Rtcw just because it looks too old, it's sad.

It's also a matter of user interface. The titles, the fonts that are not fitting new resolutions. It's blurry and it's not helping the game look attractive. If the graphic matter is too touchy it'd be awesome to have a UI facelift.

Are there any maps outside of the 7 at LAN you’d like to see in future tournaments?

Maybe Brewdog & Bremen which can be fun to play. Escape too...
